Forum: GratefulDead Subject: If you are going to trade tapes, be cool

Catching up on some of the posts over the weekend, made me remember an odd encounter I had once at a Dead show.

We were at the nearest campground to the venue, there were hundreds of Heads there, and it was just the greatest time in our lives. Throughout the weekend, there was this one well traveled head who could really espouse the Boys. He could rip off dates, shows, songs, band members, roadies, equipment, everything. He claimed he was part of the Grateful Dead "family," was from the West coast, and had seen hundreds of shows. Seemed like a real cool dude, he hit all the facts on the head, and was fun. He knew everybody who was anybody with the band.

Throughout the night of sitting around the fire with us, you could see his other side come out, and he was a bitter person. Before the night was through, he lunged across the fire at me and wanted to beat me up, screaming "you east coast Heads think you are so great..." blah blah blah. Just where did that come from, we couldn't figure it out. We were your typical, friendly, share everything we had kind of folks. And we did. We had to haul him away, and we avoided each other from then on.

From that moment, I have always been weary of "Deadheads." There are definitely some wolves in sheep clothing. I used to think that if you were a deadhead, that meant you were a peaceful, fun loving person. Cause no harm, just love the life you are leading. Share it if you have it. Naïve.

Now, I have been trading shows for over 20 years. There is nothing I enjoy more than passing along the music. But I also know how fanatical some tapers are, and I usually try to avoid them. I seem to be a very busy person, in my mind at least, and I have admittedly lead on some good friends of mine that I was getting their package out next week, only to never have sent it. I am sorry. But this doesn’t mean I’m an asshole for accepting your good tidings. Thank you very much!!!! People who know me know that I have given away twice as much music than I ever got. And food, beer, rides, ad nauseum.

If you are going to get yourself all worked up in a lather because somebody isn’t performing their “duty” in trading, don’t trade. Simple as that. But there are people out there that like to be angry, unfortunately. They think it’s funny, that others enjoy watching their tirade. It’s just childish crap, most of us are beyond that.

Mr. Direwolf seems to think he is the king of this forum. But is this the king you want? Sure, he knows his stuff. And he does contribute a lot. But is it really fun to watch him “bare his fangs?” I suppose it’s entertainment of some sort.

Dire can keep the king status. I will probably go back into hiding, I was probably crazy to think this place would be cool. But this board is cool, I have been getting some great tips from you guys, this is as good as it gets for staying on track with the music. Everyone rock on, and Direwolf, I don’t know you at all, and I’m sure you are a cool dude. But your rantings don’t make this place more attractive for getting others to contribute.

Peace

Scrim: I gotta disagree with your label of "direwolf0701" as the "King" of the Forum. This Forum is a self-governing anarchy of sorts with not too many rules, if any, but two things I've noticed about "dire:"

1.) he doesn't take himself too seriously, and 2.) he doesn't appreciate it when his Forum Friends take crap from somebody so he always leaps to their defense.

In other words, within the confines of this Forum, he cares more about people he has never met or will ever meet than he does for himself. --- if I ever have to go to war I'd want him fighting alongside me. --- AshesRising

You and me both!

And that before I read his reply. I like Mr Wolf, he's a pretty kindred spirit to me and we've had some very entertaining exchanges here! It's rare for me to find someone with a sense of humor anywhere near like my own. We,ve been in touch off the forum and have found that we may be 13 years apart twin brothers separated at birth! Now isn't that something to behold. I have fangs too but don't bare or use them often... but I never had a baby twin brother before!!! OK, I'm better now, didn't hurt my head when I fell out of my chair laughing!!!

my .02 on the trading commotion... like so many other things in this life, it's better to give than receive.

imho, it's become WAY too much about 'us' as of late. i'm as guilty as anyone for weighing in on matters that simply aren't my business (and for that i'm truly sorry).

been a while, but i'm regressing back to lurk mode (or maybe just hibernation). i'll visit the post office and meet my trading promises (obligation seemed like the wrong word) with the fine folks out here later today. quite a few of you have access to my site's underbelly; i will continue to upload & park audio back there, so by all means, feel free!

all the best gang.

love.

Dire, I have nothing against you. I get agitated when I see people bicker. We don't know each other at all. I am reacting to the rant against Liam being a deadbeat trader. And I have seen a few other rants too, but you usually straddle the fence in keeping some humor. In my interest to make my opinion known, I should have just said "take it outside guys."

I hope you're not one of those peace and love / I want to rip your throat out kind of guys. I could be in trouble.

But seriously, trading is a cool gig. I have mailed out a lot of stuff with no response back, and it sucks. Easier said than done, but if it doesn't work out I just don't do it anymore. Done issue.

In my psychotic weirdness, I also wanted to see now many hot heads I could stir up. Being rational in times of agitation can be difficult. It's funny, with email and boards, people forget how to communicate face to face, and can be so much tougher when typing. In reality, many people wouldn't go off on somebody in person. We are all cool, or else we wouldn't be here. We'd be trolling for innocents on Yahoo!

OK, peace and love, and all that crap. Hoist an icy cold pint of your favorite pale ale, slip in a mean Bertha, crank up Phil, and remember how lucky we are to know what good times, and good music, is all about. So many people don't get it!

(you can all thank me later for getting some action going on a Monday night.)

Yeah, I was trying to stir it up with my 'I love '95' post. It worked pretty well, almost too well. I was gonna post a "I wouldn't even listen to '77 if it wasn't for Donna" thread, but I was afraid I would be booted off the forum.

direwolf IS a really cool person, we gave him some persona on his name and all in good fun...so he's fed up with Liam's BS? so what?
If you promised tapes to some friends long ago, you should have delivered. And i don't mean gas, rides.. and....as you put it -ad nauseum. You're so cool, what about your word? You should send them now with a heartfelt apology. Ya sure both of you were not lunging at each other in your campfire story?
Of course, I'm only going on the info in your post...

I agree.
One addition. If there is a deadbeat trader among us, spreading the word is a good thing. We are ALL busy, and wasting time burning cd's for those who don't have the coutesy to be honest is not my bag, baby.

I don't care if the recipient has nada to offer, but be honest. Don't promise if you can't deliver. That goes for LIFE, as well as trading.

High FlLow, Dude- you do not even see that you contradict yourself in your short post...why close with "Ain't no time to hate" when the rest of your post is full of words, vitriol, and name calling and holier than thou trading attitude that Scrim was talking about- I say to you- how in the hell do you know that someone who "promised" to do some trading in a timeframe did not have their dog break out in pustules that were bleeding, or their wife taken to an institution because she is bi-polar and went off her meds?

What kind of infantile logic or semblance of reason lead you to conclude that because someone made some kind of "promise" and, in your mind, was not quick enough to act, that they are being dishonest? Did you even understand the man who started this post?

Ain't no time to hate? There is nothing BUT hate in your words. Spread the word around? What? Did any one rob anybody here? Did anyone on this forum hurt anyone in your family? You would disparage and LIBEL someone if you did not even know their circumstances? Would you even bother to find out?

Ain't no time to hate- transference at its best- Do you truly believe that your closing statement means anything at all in light of your post and other posts you have made here? If you want to go all "honest" on us- be honest with yourself first- telling everyone to spread the word based on what? Thankfully there are enough mature people here, mostly the lurkers, who see right through this facade-

I do not hate you- I do not even dislike you- I pity you, actually, and just hope that you are under the age of 35- there is much more wisdom to come if you are- A few folks here tried to talk someone out of providing me with cassettes of shows he now has on hard media- he paid no mind and went right ahead and sent them- And what has been the result so far? I may not have shipped a single cassette copy to anyone- but every musical reference I have made in the last few weeks to shows were shows I heard on the cassettes-

I have shared some great musical moments with everyone here- and some did appreciate it. It really is sad you have to pull out your johnson here and say how much bigger it is- the more heavily you trade, the bigger your johnson-

Well my good friend- and I say that with all due respect, as you are simply another part of myself, the next time you want to disparage MY name or reputation, remember this- I suffer from a biochemical disorder known as Adult Attention Deficit disorder-

ADD as it is known, and I have said this briefly before, is very debilitating- It affects the person's ability to organize and structure their life- it makes a person want to do ten things at once and once you start one of them- another thought takes you away someplace else- I do it no justice here as it is late tonight- but I encourage you to read this link http://www.faslink.org/adhdtips.htm

Here is an excerpt:

Remember that what you have is a neuropsychiatric condition. It is genetically transmitted. It is caused by biology, by how your brain is wired. It is NOT a disease of the will, nor a moral failing. It is NOT caused by a weakness in character, nor by a failure to mature. It's cure is not to be found in the power of the will, nor in punishment, nor in sacrifice, nor in pain. ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS.

Would you hold it against a blind person that they could not see?

If I made promises I have not delivered on- it is not because I am dishonest- not because I am selfish, not because I am a deadbeat- it is because for me to structure time and place it is a monumenal task

Do you enjoy making fun of mental illness? Do you enjoy calling mentally ill people names?

I doubt it- not your inner self.

Aint no time to hate....brother, you gave youself your own answer- as soon as you stop hating, you will start living and I truly hope that happens for you

Last I looked, this was not a tapers forum- there are plenty of those around- and last I looked, I was told by those who gave to me to offer it back- and I have- but mostly locally- and I am technologically challenged-

I am none of the things that were said about me on the thread about band misdirections- what is hilarious about that thread is the person I was calling a troll had actually responded to my post about unique eyes of the World New YEar 83 ( a cassette I heard)- I went to the wrong thread to respond to him- that is why no one could figure out who I was calling out- go back to the eyes thread and you will see the guy who remarked I had too much time on my hands if I was listening to that show

The pack behavior that ensued, the fur ripping and bloodletting was a thing of pure beauty- I was otherwise occupied much of the holiday and had no idea I was the roasted turkey for dinner...HA....all because an assumption was made that what you read here is somehow a reality- it is not- it is cyberspace- it is not real time- I had not called anyone out in a month- Dire and I had made peace, so it would be illogical I was calling him a troll- but few think- most react- so human- so mammalian

If anyone made it this far, scrim was right- and for those who think I have deprived you of anything call me at 201-330-0763- I will be glad to see what I can do for you in gettin you what I have that you might need.

Oh my good fucking god! Way to go Liam, calling out 'high flow', a person as near to being an artisan of generosity as i have found on this forum. Liam, your too verbose post is just chock-full of the high-and-mighty and the look-at-poor-me, but interesting in that you took it off line to work things out with 'direwolf', and didn't at least show the same respect to 'high flow'. And for someone who claims all these mental issues, you sure are able to mentally navigate around these threads better than everyone else it seems, with your great recall ability of who said what and where.

Get real or stay dead. You are _persona non grata_ to me.

my beef with Liam was due to no communications at all coming from him after an offer(s) were made. He and I have emailed each other and all is worked out and we are on good terms (he explained his side and I mine - and Im pretty sure we are cool once again).

Pretty sure other people I trade/share with on this site know I keep up with my side of the bargain (yes, highflow the kimocks are being mailed tomorrow - lol)

and btw - did someone annoint me KING OF THE FORUM???? cool beans!!! was there any prize that accompanied the coronation - if so, i must have been "in abstentia" at the time, so please forward it at earliest convenience :)

No seriously, J/K! =)
I know I've mentioned it before, but I am someone who trades, the good-old fashioned way, thru smail-mail! And I have to tell you I LOVE IT! It's totally fun and I've met the coolest people because you discuss what shows you have and which are your faves. In the past year I've encountered only 2 people who have said they would follow thru and haven't. Yes, I lost disks, but I look at it as I'm 'spreading the love.' I know that I could very easily learn bit torrent or downloading (ok, maybe not so easy) and all that, but then my fun would be gone. And I wouldn't have as many cool friends as I do now!

But buddy, and everybody else reading, you gotta lighten up. I hear what your sayin, but honestly, just becuause he (dire) posts more, and lets his attitude (and I would like to think humor too), come out, doesn't make him king of anything. You are free to post as much too, and say anything you want too. No one is stopping anyone from participating.
You know what I find funny. Go look at the Forum Professions thread... see how long that is! And A LOT of people posted, who don't normally post. Maybe it was the fact that they felt comfortable answering a simple question. So someone try and ask another simple question. And every now and then when we come upon Dire's attitude (and humor) or anyone else's, take it for what it is. entertaining. smile and move on.

Since no one asked for my opinion, I guess I'll give it. First, if there are any unused title left, I'd like one. If muse or jester is available, I'll take which ever pays better. Should the "wolf in sheeps clothing" (that one nearly eluded me)have taken his beef with Liam offline/emailed him- yeah, maybe. Sounds like everyone (DW/Liam)worked out their differences. You get this many people "together" for this long, the best of friends will have their moments. I for one thought the meds had turned our boy into Randle McMurphy! I have made only one trade with the Wolf- I sent him one cd and got back 8. If he did this in the middle of the caf at work, anger management time. A freaking internet forum regarding music, who gives a fuch. So now, as the jester time to go back to juggling fire and such.

I haven't listened to Percy Hill in a million years. There was a time in mid-90's where they were stuck in my CD player. I used to have a bunch of bootlegs of them. My good friend, RIP, was Joe's brother.

Last I heard, they broke up, but I thought that was in 1999.

I was wrong-the recent cd was from 98. Getting old does have drawbacks!

They reformed in early 2000's and had a relatively big comercial cd, like #1 jammy award. Much jazzier. I'd be happy to send you a copy. If interested, email an address at jodymcollins at sbcglobal dot net

Hey, I was the jester first! I demand retribution! It's always the poor jester getting kicked around. "Jester make me laugh", "Jester, do a couple of flips", "Jester do a pratfal and make the princess laugh"

And on top of it all, someone else wants to come in and steal my gig! Well I'm not having any of it! This poor jester isn't going to sit around with a Hairy-assed King and self-proclaimed Queen and and arch-dukey thing and be played for a fool.

I'm leaving the palace to tell people some cool stories about the Grateful Dead, lull them into a sense of false-complacency, then POUNCE! on them...stupin East-Coast Jesters.

definitely have winessed my share of freaks at shows/ campgrounds, etc. always weird shit going on...sounds like this guy had a alcohol/ acid thing going on...

my brother and I once traded tapes with this dude...we first exchanged lists and all of his tapes were graded A+ or A, we were like "cool!" we did a 6 for 6 tape trade through the mail and we sent him 6 of the crispiest soundboards we could muster (we were conservative on grading we never gave out A+)...we got our tapes in the mail and were anxious to get jammin to some "A+" tapes...well, the tapes were brutal...all of them...unlistenable...the best was maybe a C- being kind...we never heard from the dude again...I think we used the tapes for deadhours...

I know what you mean about grading. I once hooked up with this guy who had thousands of tapes, his whole living room wall was a custom made tape rack. But he was more into trading to get the shear volume of shows, and not so much the best recordings. I was giving him my best, and all I was getting was mediocre stuff. True, it was stuff that I asked for, but it wasn't graded properly. And what was a little discouraging was that he never commented on the quality that I was giving him. I suppose in a way, we always trade our best fishing for some complimnets: "Dude, that was the best sounding '73 I ever heard! How did you get such a low gen soundboard??"

With the LMA and torrents, trading through the mail has no interest for me anymore. But I'm glad it's still happening. Jeesh, most everything going around lately is the best copy I have ever heard. I'm humbled with what I got.

Trade on folks, and by golly, if you are first time traders, don't whelsh on your promises! (Wait until you get their trust!) (OK, not funny...)

As a longtime lurker here, let me come out and say that Dire is one of my favorite posters here. Yes, he sometimes comes off as kind of a prick, but only in the most endearing way.

All hail the king!!!!

PS I hate trading deadbeats, so I completely understand the tirade that apparently prompted this.

Can I be the court Jester?

I think I'll really have the funny/entertaining thing down if I can just finish "Dire's book on correct Jestering".
It's a real page turner and loads of good pranks.

Do we have an election or what?
